Brief biography of barack obama
Barack Obama served as the 44th President of the United States. His story is the American story — values from the heartland, a middle-class upbringing in a strong family, hard work and education as the means of getting ahead, and the conviction that a life so blessed should be lived in service to others. When Barack Obama was elected president in , he became the first African American to hold the office.
The framers of the Constitution always hoped that our leadership would not be limited to Americans of wealth or family connections. Subject to the prejudices of their time—many of them owned slaves—most would not have foreseen an African American president. Before fifth grade, he returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents and attend Punahou School on scholarship.

In his memoir Dreams from My Father , Obama describes the complexities of discovering his identity in adolescence. After two years at Occidental College in Los Angeles, he transferred to Columbia University, where he studied political science and international relations. Following graduation in , Obama worked in New York City, then became a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago, coordinating with churches to improve housing conditions and set up job-training programs in a community hit hard by steel mill closures.
Returning to Chicago, he joined a small law firm specializing in civil rights. In order to work without interruptions, Obama and his wife, Michelle, traveled to Bali where he wrote for several months.
The manuscript was finally published as Dreams from My Father in mid He married Michelle in [ 69 ] and settled down with her in Hyde Park , a liberal, integrated, middle-class Chicago neighborhood with a history of electing reform-minded politicians independent of the Daley political machine. One effect of the marriage was to bring Obama closer to other politically influential Chicagoans.
One of Michelle's best friends was Jesse Jackson 's daughter, Santita Jackson , later the godmother of the Obamas' first child. Michelle herself had worked as an aide to Mayor Richard M. Marty Nesbitt, a young, successful black businessman who played basketball with Michelle's brother, Craig Robinson , became Obama's best friend and introduced him to other African-American business people.
Before the marriage, according to Craig, Obama talked about his political ambitions, even saying that he might run for president someday. Obama directed Illinois Project Vote from April to October , a voter registration drive, officially nonpartisan, that helped Carol Moseley Braun become the first black woman ever elected to the Senate.
According to Sandy Newman, who founded Project Vote, Obama "raised more money than any of our state directors had ever done. He did a great job of enlisting a broad spectrum of organizations and people, including many who did not get along well with one another.

Peter Baker had established himself as an excellent writer of political history. He puts situations in prospective and fleshes out the politics and motives. The acknowledgments section clearly states that this coffee-table, overly illustrated, oversized tome 5 lbs by weight was the creation of the New York Times as a show piece, and not the serious Obama biography that Baker might want to write.
