The debut album with this lineup, Truth credited simply to Jeff Beck , released in August , paved the way for the invention of the heavy rock genre, with tracks including You Shook Me, Rock My Plimsoul and Let Me Love You providing a virtual blueprint for the first Led Zeppelin album. Such were the similarities in approach, Beck felt that with Zeppelin his old friend Page had borrowed over-freely from his stock of ideas.

I never, ever envisaged having massive success. Beck put together a new line-up and recorded two interim albums with the Jeff Beck Group Mk. While the musicianship on these recordings was always of the highest order, there was the nagging sense of a supreme talent being employed in the service of less than stellar material. It opened up the doors.
It was red carpet, you know. Following it was difficult. Among the high points were the infectiously funky Come Dancing written by Walden , an eerie Hammer composition Blue Wind , and a stunning version of the Charles Mingus standard Goodbye Pork Pie Hat given the full-screen Beck treatment. Beck concluded a trilogy of jazz fusion albums with There And Back , released in , which remains one of his most underrated albums.
With both Jan Hammer and Tony Hymas on keyboards, Mo Foster on bass and the superhuman Simon Phillips on drums, Beck took an uber-technical yet super-catchy melodic format to its outer limits. The opening track, Star Cycle , a typically taut and edgy rumble written by Hammer, became the theme music for the zeitgeist-defining UK music TV show The Tube , while the supercharged, double-bass-drum-driven Space Boogie written by Hymas and Phillips took the virtuoso prowess of trailblazers like the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Billy Cobham into a thrilling new, accessible dimension.
Beck became something of a recluse — by rock star standards — during the s and s. While Clapton, Page and many of his other contemporaries were bestriding the stages in London and Philadelphia during Live Aid in , Beck was content to follow events on a TV in the corner while he worked on one of his vintage hot rods in the garage of his estate near Tunbridge Wells.
Nile Rodgers was brought in as someone with a commercial ear to help with the production, and Beck was even persuaded to sing on a couple of tracks. It was around this time Beck started to become known as an elite gun-for-hire, a role that he was happy to embrace but never took too seriously. A couple of months after the sessions had finished, producer George Martin received a telephone call from Beck, who wanted to record a solo section again.
Bemused, Martin replied: "I'm sorry, Jeff, but the record is in the shops! Beck put together a live band for a US tour, which was preceded by a small and unannounced gig at The Newlands Tavern in Peckham , London. He toured through April and May , mostly supporting the Mahavishnu Orchestra , retaining Max Middleton on keyboards but with a new rhythm section of bassist Wilbur Bascomb and noted session drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie , who was also associated with Hummingbird.
In a May show in Cleveland at the Music Hall, he became frustrated with an early version of a talk box he used on his arrangement of the Beatles' " She's a Woman ", and after breaking a string, tossed his legendary Yardbirds-era Fender Stratocaster guitar off the stage. He did the same with the talk box and finished the show playing a Les Paul guitar without the box.
In addition, he performed a guitar and drum instrumental with Johnny Yoshinaga and, at the end of the festival, joined in a live jam with bassist Felix Pappalardi of Mountain and vocalist Akira "Joe" Yamanaka from the Flower Travellin' Band.

Beck returned to the studio and recorded Wired , which paired ex-Mahavishnu Orchestra drummer and composer Narada Michael Walden and keyboardist Jan Hammer. To promote the album, Beck joined forces with the Jan Hammer Group, playing a show supporting Alvin Lee at The Roundhouse in May , before embarking on a seven-month-long world tour.
At this point, Beck was a tax exile and took up residency in the US, remaining there until his return to the UK in the autumn of In the spring of , he began rehearsing with ex- Return to Forever bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Gerry Brown towards a projected appearance at the Knebworth Festival, but this was cancelled after Brown dropped out.
Beck toured Japan for three weeks in November with an ad hoc group consisting of Clarke and newcomers Tony Hymas keyboards and Simon Phillips drums.
